Rights Group Reports Omani Advocate Talib al-Saedi Forcibly Disappeared

The Gulf Centre for Human Rights (GCHR) has reported that Omani human rights advocate Talib al-Saedi has been forcibly disappeared by the Internal Security Service (ISS) of Oman. The incident occurred on November 30 when he was summoned to the ISS Special Branch in Sohar, Oman’s largest city. Since then, there has been no communication from Saedi, as he has been denied contact with both his family and a lawyer.

Background on Talib al-Saedi

Talib al-Saedi has been an outspoken advocate for human rights in Oman. Recently, he highlighted the absence of a government assistance program that could have potentially saved the lives of a family of six in the al-Amarat district. They tragically died from carbon monoxide poisoning in their home.

His calls for accountability gained attention, drawing support from various activists. However, Saedi has previously come under the scrutiny of the security services. He has faced arrests on two occasions: once in July 2014 and again in March 2015.

Previous Arrests

  • July 2014: Arrested for advocating a peaceful march in support of Palestinians.
  • March 2015: Arrested for activities related to social media.

Despite these challenges, GCHR states that Saedi’s work has predominantly focused on peaceful human rights advocacy and calls for reform in Oman.

Human Rights Context in Oman

Oman has faced criticism for its treatment of activists. The mix of repression and increased state spending has stifled public discontent. Independent bloggers and human rights campaigners often find themselves targeted under lese-majesty laws, which prohibit criticism of the sultan and his government. Since 2011, many activists and journalists have been arrested under such laws.

Amnesty International has criticized Oman for imposing severe restrictions on freedom of expression. Despite some gradual political openings in recent years, the organization notes ongoing discrimination against women in both law and practice.

Call for Saedi’s Release

GCHR is calling for the immediate release of Talib al-Saedi. They also urge the Oman government to ensure the safety of all rights activists, both online and offline, in an environment free from judicial harassment.
