FAU Revamps Student Union with New Lounge Addition

Florida Atlantic University (FAU) is in the process of renovating an empty space on its Boca Raton campus. This transformation aims to create a new commuter lounge as part of a broader expansion of the Student Union. This initiative promises to provide students with a dedicated area to relax and recharge between classes, as stated by Student Union Director Chris Lynch.

Details of the Commuter Lounge

The lounge will specifically be located in the Diamond Palm Room, adjacent to the esports arena that was established on the first floor in 2020. Currently, construction is underway, but FAU has yet to announce an opening date for the new facility.

Background on the Diamond Palm Room

• The Diamond Palm Room was designed in 2020 as part of an initial Student Union expansion.
• Initially, this space was utilized for various events while plans for its permanent use were evaluated.
• The current renovation is aimed at establishing a long-term purpose for the room.

Broader Student Union Expansion Plans

According to documentation for the 2024 Student Union Expansion, FAU has outlined several ambitious projects. These include:

• A new single-story multipurpose event center.
• An outdoor courtyard that will connect to the library.
• Updated exterior facades for existing facilities.
• Minor renovations to three first-floor spaces, including the Diamond Palm Room.
