New Orleans Lawyer Charged with Defrauding Client’s Family of $250,000

New Orleans defense attorney Tanzanika Ruffin faces serious allegations of defrauding her client and his family out of $250,000. This accusation was formally presented in a motion filed in criminal court on December 4.

Details of the Allegations Against Tanzanika Ruffin

According to the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office, Ruffin misappropriated funds sent by a family from New York. Payments included:

  • $66,000 in April
  • Nearly $13,000 in June
  • $90,000 in September
  • Over $100,000 in October

Prosecutors claim these payments were for legal services that were never provided. Rafael Goyeneche, president of the Metropolitan Crime Commission, emphasized that these actions represent a significant breach of trust.

Background on the Case

The case centers around defendant Kai Hansen, who was arrested for allegedly battering a police officer on Bourbon Street in March. Following his arrest, his family sought legal representation from Ruffin. Initially, Hansen’s bond was set at $8,000, yet Ruffin requested $66,000 for bond money. She later demanded an additional $12,500 for what she termed a new criminal charge that never existed, according to the District Attorney’s motion.

Fabricated Claims of Settlement

Allegations detail that Ruffin told Hansen’s family that $250,000 in restitution was necessary to resolve the case. However, this amount was never officially discussed, and prosecutors assert that Ruffin invented the claim of a settlement.

Implications for the Legal Profession

Legal analysts have voiced concern over the allegations. Joe Raspanti noted that if proven true, these actions could tarnish the reputation of the entire legal profession. Goyeneche remarked, “That gives the legal profession a black eye.”

Previous Disciplinary Actions

This is not the first instance of Ruffin facing scrutiny. Goyeneche pointed out that in 2004, she was suspended from practicing law for 30 days due to misconduct involving threats against a person over an unpaid handyman job. The District Attorney’s Office dismissed her following that incident.

Possible Consequences for Ruffin

With the new allegations emerging, legal experts suggest that Ruffin may face both criminal charges and disciplinary action from the Louisiana State Bar. Raspanti warned that she could encounter serious repercussions if these allegations are found to be accurate.

As of now, Ruffin and her representatives have chosen not to comment on the situation.
