Baylor Appoints Doug McNamee as New Athletic Director

In an important development for Baylor University, Doug McNamee has been appointed as the new athletic director. President Linda Livingstone and the board of regents made this decision after a thorough search following the departure of former athletic director Mack Rhoades in November.

About Doug McNamee

Doug McNamee, a Baylor alumnus, returns to the university with a wealth of experience. He completed his bachelor’s degree in 2003 and earned a master’s degree in 2005, both from Baylor. His professional journey at the university began in 2012, when he became an Associate Athletic Director, focusing on the Baylor Foundation.

In 2017, he advanced to Senior Associate Athletic Director, where he dealt with External Affairs. After leaving Baylor Athletics in 2018, McNamee became President of the Magnolia Company, a prominent brand founded by alumni Chip and Joanna Gaines, known nationwide for its influence in Waco.

Most recently, he served as President of Field & Stream, a leading outdoor lifestyle brand, starting in 2022.

Challenges Ahead

McNamee’s appointment comes at a critical time for Baylor. He must address several pressing issues as he steps into his new role. Key priorities include:

  • Deciding the future of head football coach Dave Aranda.
  • Revitalizing a struggling football program.
  • Ensuring the basketball team remains competitive in the new NIL landscape.
  • Improving the baseball program, which has not found significant success since 2019.
  • Re-engaging a fan base eager for victories.

This leadership change aims to bridge gaps and stabilize Baylor’s athletic programs. McNamee’s deep understanding of Baylor’s culture, along with his experience both on and off the field, positions him as a strong asset in navigating these challenges.

Institutional Knowledge and Vision

McNamee’s extensive history with Baylor equips him with invaluable insight. He has experienced both the university’s victories and its struggles, including navigating through challenging times. His familiarity with campus culture and the local Waco community enhances his ability to connect with donors and supporters.

While McNamee may not be a well-known name nationally, his commitment to Baylor’s success and stability is evident. His appointment reflects a strategic decision aimed at fostering long-term growth and support for the university’s athletic programs.
