NFL Issues Five Fines for Week 13 ‘Violent Gestures’

During Week 13 of the NFL season, players faced repercussions for inappropriate gestures. The league issued a total of 31 fines, highlighting concerns over player conduct. Five of these fines were specifically for offensive hand gestures deemed as antisocial behavior.

NFL Fines for Unsportsmanlike Conduct

Among the notable penalties, Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield and running back Bucky Irving were fined for a touchdown celebration that included the controversial “nose wipe” gesture. Mayfield received a fine of $14,491, while Irving was fined $6,349. It’s important to note that they were not penalized during the game for this gesture.

The Controversy Over the “Nose Wipe”

The NFL banned the “nose wipe” earlier in the year, citing its association with gang culture and disrespectful undertones. Troy Vincent, the NFL’s Executive Vice President of Football Operations, emphasized the significance of the ban, saying:

  • “The nose wipe has gang connotations; it’s disrespectful.”
  • “Young men come from that era and have been influenced by social media.”

In addition to Mayfield and Irving, several other players received fines for similar gestures:

  • DK Metcalf, wide receiver for the Steelers – $14,491
  • Nico Collins, wide receiver for the Texans – $14,491
  • Kyu Blu Kelly, cornerback for the Raiders – $5,722

Appeals and Outcomes

All fines can be appealed, but the outcomes of these appeals are not publicly disclosed. It remains unclear if players who successfully appeal their fines will engage in celebrations like the nose wipe afterward.

The NFL’s focus on player conduct highlights an ongoing effort to maintain a respectful environment on the field. As the league navigates these issues, players are encouraged to be mindful of their actions during games.
