Job Opportunities Open for Young People on Benefits in Construction and Hospitality
The government is introducing job opportunities aimed at young individuals receiving benefits in the construction and hospitality sectors. This initiative is designed to assist 900,000 young people on Universal Credit seeking employment.
Job Opportunities for Young People
This program includes a “dedicated work support session” for those eligible, followed by four weeks of intensive support. An employment coach will guide participants through one of six pathways:
- Work
- Work experience
- Apprenticeship
- Wider training
- Learning
- Workplace training program with a guaranteed interview
Expected Outcomes
Over the first six months, the government anticipates that more than 1,000 young people will secure jobs through this initiative. Government officials believe that with the proper support, young individuals will seize these opportunities.
Criticism of the Initiative
Despite the positive outlook, some criticism has emerged. Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary Helen Whately has expressed concern regarding tax increases and their impact on youth unemployment. She argues that these tax hikes undermine job creation for young people.
Whately described the scheme as a misleading effort, suggesting that it offers limited support amidst broader economic challenges. Further details of related strategies are expected soon, coinciding with the government’s forthcoming national youth strategy.
