Alex Golesh Announces New Offensive Coordinator and Highlights Key Contributions
Alex Golesh has officially announced the appointment of Joel Gordon as the new offensive coordinator for the Auburn Tigers. This decision follows Gordon’s successful tenure with Golesh at the University of South Florida (USF), where he served in the same role for three seasons.
Background of Joel Gordon
Gordon and Golesh first collaborated at Iowa State, where they both joined the staff in 2016. During their time together, Gordon advanced from an offensive assistant to quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator before leaving in 2022.
Key Contributions at Iowa State
- Gordon played a pivotal role in developing Brock Purdy, now a quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers.
- The Iowa State passing offense thrived under his leadership, achieving notable success.
Success at USF
At USF, Gordon was instrumental in crafting an offense that ranked in the top 50 for yards per game in each of his three seasons. Notably, in 2025, their offensive unit achieved an impressive second place nationwide.
Quarterback Development
Under Gordon’s guidance, star quarterback Byrum Brown excelled, throwing for over 3,000 yards and rushing for more than 1,000 in the same season. This performance made him the only quarterback in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) to accomplish this milestone in 2025.
Impact on Auburn’s Program
With a history of developing quarterbacks, Gordon is expected to significantly improve Auburn’s offensive performance. The Tigers have experienced quarterback inconsistency over the past three seasons, with six different players starting games since the beginning of the 2023 season. In 2025, no Auburn quarterback exceeded 1,309 passing yards, contributing to a total of only 2,365 passing yards and 11 touchdowns for the team.
Head Coach’s Confidence
Golesh expressed his admiration for Gordon, stating, “Joel is a hell of a ball coach and an incredible dude. From a quarterback development standpoint, he’s the best I’ve been around.” His confidence in Gordon’s abilities suggests a promising future for Auburn’s offensive strategy.
