Red Sox Pitching Prospect Joins Japanese League After Decade with Team

After a decade in the Red Sox organization, pitcher Bryan Mata is set to join a team in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB). This transition marks the end of his long journey with a franchise he never reached the Major League level with.

Bryan Mata’s Journey with the Red Sox

Mata, who signed with the Red Sox as an international free agent from Venezuela in January 2016, quickly gained recognition for his impressive pitching skills. His fastball and pitch variety made him stand out, earning him appearances in the Futures Game in 2018.

  • Tenure with Red Sox: 10 years
  • Age: 27 (turns in May)
  • International Signing: January 2016
  • Futures Game Appearance: 2018

Prospect Status and Injuries

Throughout his time with the Red Sox, Mata was often ranked among the organization’s top pitching prospects. From 2018 to 2023, he consistently appeared in Baseball America’s top-10 rankings but faced significant challenges due to injuries. Notably, he underwent Tommy John surgery in April 2021, which impacted his playing schedule.

In 2025, Mata showcased his potential during spring training, demonstrating impressive velocity. However, he ultimately did not secure a position on the major league roster and began the season at Triple-A Worcester.

Recent Performances

In the minor leagues, Mata completed the 2025 season with a 5.08 ERA across 67 ⅓ innings in 42 relief appearances. Despite this, he found success in winter ball, achieving an impressive 1.50 ERA over 30 innings in eight games, performing notably well for the Magallanes team in Venezuela.
