Sweeney’s Transformation for the Role
To embody Christy, Sweeney underwent a significant physical transformation. She gained 35 pounds, donned brown contact lenses, and wore various wigs reminiscent of the late ’80s and early ’90s. Additionally, she trained with a dialect coach to adopt Martin’s West Virginia accent. “When I looked in the mirror for the first time, I didn’t even recognize myself,” Sweeney shared.

The film begins by depicting Christy as a promising basketball player who faced societal challenges due to her sexual identity. Aged 21, she entered boxing in 1989, earning the moniker “the Coal Miner’s Daughter.” In 1991, Christy married her boxing coach, Jim Martin, who later became abusive.
