Sean Recast in ‘Boston Blue’: Here’s Why

Andrew Terraciano, known for portraying Sean Reagan on “Blue Bloods,” has been replaced for the spinoff series “Boston Blue.” This change marks a significant shift in the storyline as the show transitions into a new chapter. The announcement of Terraciano’s recasting came on a poignant day—his graduation from New York University—when his mother informed him of the decision.

Recasting Sean in “Boston Blue”: The Reasons Behind the Change

Terraciano, now 22, shared his experience of receiving the news. He expressed that, despite the disappointment, he feels gratitude for his time on “Blue Bloods.” He stated, “It’s beautiful because you’ll always remember every single line and every day that you had the opportunity to be that character.”

Donnie Wahlberg, who reprises his role as Danny Reagan in “Boston Blue,” reached out to Terraciano to offer support. The two developed a strong bond while working on “Blue Bloods.” Their friendship remains intact, with both actors cherishing their time together.

New Direction for “Boston Blue”

The spinoff premiered in October 2024, just under a year after the original series concluded in December 2023. According to Brandon Margolis, co-showrunner of “Boston Blue,” the recasting was necessary to explore new story dynamics. “We’re telling a new chapter in both [Sean and Danny’s] lives,” he explained.

  • Terraciano played Sean Reagan on “Blue Bloods” for 11 seasons.
  • The recasting decision aimed to bring fresh energy to Sean’s character.
  • Mika Amonsen takes over the role in “Boston Blue.”
  • Wahlberg is the only main cast member from “Blue Bloods” continuing in the spinoff.

Margolis praised Amonsen’s interpretation of Sean, highlighting the character’s vulnerability and ambition. He stated, “It felt like there was an organic opportunity to bring in a new performance.” This fresh approach aims to dramatize the changes in both Sean and Danny’s lives as they navigate new challenges.

Amonsen’s Perspective on Taking Over

Mika Amonsen shared his feelings regarding the role with Us Weekly, admitting he felt “a ton of pressure.” He emphasized his desire to respect the character and the legacy that Terraciano established. Amonsen noted, “I really want to maintain Sean as close as I can out of respect for this character that everyone loves.”
