Lions Sign Veteran Safety, Release Tight End

The Detroit Lions are actively reshaping their roster in response to injury challenges. Recently, they announced the acquisition of veteran safety Jalen Mills off waivers from the Houston Texans. As part of this roster adjustment, the team waived tight end Hayden Rucci.

Lions Fortify Secondary with Jalen Mills Acquisition

Jalen Mills, a seasoned defensive back, originally played at LSU before being drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the seventh round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Initially starting his career as a cornerback, Mills transitioned to the safety position in his fifth season. After completing his rookie contract, he joined the New England Patriots for two seasons before spending the previous year in New York. There, he started on the Giants’ practice squad before moving to the Jets’ active roster. This offseason, Mills signed with the Texans but appeared in only four games, accumulating 48 defensive snaps and 31 special teams snaps.

His arrival in Detroit is timely, especially given the recent loss of Pro Bowl safety Brian Branch, who suffered a season-ending Achilles injury. Mills will bring much-needed veteran experience to the Lions’ secondary, complementing players like Avonte Maddox, another converted safety.

Roster Changes in the Tight End Position

The Lions made headlines by releasing tight end Hayden Rucci, especially after the previous day’s decision to let go of Ross Dwelley. This move raises eyebrows as it leaves the team with only one active tight end, Anthony Firkser.

  • Active tight end: Anthony Firkser
  • Recent releases: Hayden Rucci, Ross Dwelley

To offset this tight end shortage, the Lions have been utilizing offensive lineman Dan Skipper in a blocking tight end role. Additionally, there is a possibility that Shane Zylstra may return from injured reserve soon, which could restore depth to the position. A trio of Zylstra, Skipper, and Firkser would enhance the Lions’ offensive capabilities, despite the limited depth that currently exists.

The Lions will continue to strategize and adapt their roster to maximize their performance as the season progresses.
