Emory Program Fosters Cross-Cultural Understanding and Leadership Skills

This year’s Emory Intercultural Leadership Program (EILP) held its annual leadership retreat, highlighting the importance of cross-cultural understanding and leadership skills among participants. Students came together to foster international friendships and engage in meaningful connections. Ava Havidic, a second-year student at Emory College of Arts and Sciences, described the retreat as transformative, emphasizing that the event welcomed vulnerability and active listening to diverse stories.

About the Emory Intercultural Leadership Program

The EILP is part of the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS). It serves both international and domestic students from all levels, including undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs at Emory. This year-long cohort program equips students with essential global leadership skills and intercultural communication strategies.

Program Goals and Activities

The core mission of EILP is to empower students to lead with curiosity, empathy, and purpose. Assistant Vice Provost Shinn Ko stated that the program enhances cross-cultural understanding and fosters collaborative learning, preparing participants to thrive in a globalized world.

During the recent retreat, participants engaged in:

  • Storytelling activities
  • Listening circles
  • Team-building exercises

Students also explored different intercultural conflict styles to better understand diverse cultural perspectives and improve communication across differences. This skill set is vital for effective leadership in multicultural environments.

Emotional Intelligence and Service Learning

Throughout the program, students participate in monthly seminars designed to enhance their emotional intelligence and intercultural effectiveness. These sessions foster rich dialogues that shift perspectives and deepen understanding. Camilla Basco, an Emory College student, expressed her aspiration to build bridges for new possibilities through the EILP.

The program culminates in a collaborative service-learning project in the spring semester. Participants apply their newly acquired skills to effect positive change in the community. Soundharya Kumaresan, a first-year PhD student, emphasized that the EILP empowers future leaders to think globally and act with empathy.
