Matthews Arena Deconstruction Unveiled: Key Steps and Strategies
Matthews Arena, a historic structure located on the Northeastern University campus in Boston, is set for deconstruction. The arena, which spans 106,000 square feet and can hold nearly 5,000 attendees, has been a significant site since its opening 115 years ago. It will be dismantled to pave the way for a new multi-purpose athletics and recreation complex.
Deconstruction Timeline and Process
The deconstruction process will commence this winter. Suffolk Construction has been appointed to oversee this careful dismantling. Beginning in February, crews will use a high-reach excavator to methodically deconstruct the arena piece by piece, ensuring safety and preservation of materials.

Salvaging Historic Elements

Memorabilia, including seats and bricks from the arena, will be available for sale. These unique pieces will be collected, stored, and sold over the next three years until the new arena is completed.
