Ryan Beard Appointed as Coastal Carolina Football Head Coach

Coastal Carolina University has officially appointed Ryan Beard as the new head football coach for the Chanticleers. This announcement was made by Chance Miller, the Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics and University Recreation, on a Thursday in Conway, S.C. Beard will be the fifth head coach in the program’s history.

Ryan Beard’s Coaching Background

Before joining Coastal Carolina, Ryan Beard had a successful stint at Missouri State University. He became the head coach there in December 2022, making him the youngest individual to hold that position in the school’s history. Under Beard’s leadership, Missouri State achieved notable milestones, including a 7–5 record in its inaugural season at the FBS level in 2025 and a spot in the Xbox Bowl.

  • Beard’s coaching record includes:
  • Two consecutive FCS playoff appearances in 2020 and 2021.
  • Four All-Americans and 18 all-conference players developed during his tenure.
  • A strong defense that finished second in Conference USA for total defense and rushing defense in 2025.

Beard’s Impressive Trajectory

During his time at Missouri State, Beard significantly improved the team’s performance, establishing a disciplined and physical style of play. His previous roles also include serving as defensive coordinator, which enabled him to enhance the Bears’ competitive edge profoundly. The 2024 season was particularly fruitful, where Missouri State claimed an 8–4 record and a No. 23 national ranking in FCS.

Expectations at Coastal Carolina

Coastal Carolina officials are excited about Beard joining the team. Vice President Miller expressed confidence in Beard’s ability to elevate the program, citing his remarkable talent for inspiring athletes and maximizing talent.

Dr. James J. Winebrake, the university president, praised Beard’s commitment to student-athlete success both on and off the field. Beard’s robust recruiting background, especially in the Midwest, is anticipated to enrich the program further as he builds his first roster.

Personal Background

Originally from Bowling Green, Kentucky, Beard was a standout defensive back at Western Kentucky from 2007 to 2011. He earned All-Sun Belt honors during his collegiate career and holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the same institution. Beard and his wife, Katie, have four children: Beau, Lainey, and twins Jacob and Kailey.

Ryan Beard’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for Coastal Carolina football, with expectations for continued success as the program builds on its reputation for competitiveness and excellence.
