Cam Newton Criticizes Colts’ Decision to Sign Philip Rivers
Former NFL quarterback Cam Newton has expressed his disappointment regarding the Indianapolis Colts’ recent signing of Philip Rivers. Rivers, an established player in his mid-40s, joined the Colts after several years away from the league. Conversely, Newton, still in his mid-30s, was not considered, leading him to feel slighted.
Newton’s Reaction to Rivers’ Signing
On his podcast, “4th&1 with Cam Newton,” Newton discussed his feelings about not being contacted by the Colts. He referred to the decision as “a slap in my face.” His co-host, Omari “Penny” Collins, noted that teams might not realize Newton is available due to his prominence as a podcaster and TV personality.
Newton responded emphatically, questioning why teams would inquire about his availability when Rivers did not signal he was ready to return. He voiced frustration over inconsistent standards applied to different players. “Why you asking me to do something that everybody else didn’t do?” Newton stated emphatically.
Rivers’ NFL Career
Rivers spent the majority of his NFL career with the San Diego Chargers, playing 16 seasons before joining the Colts for one year. He retired in 2020 as an eight-time Pro Bowl selection. Rivers ranks among the top 10 in NFL history for passing yards, touchdowns, and completions. His recent signing is notable as he reunites with Colts head coach Shane Steichen, who has a long history with him from their time together in San Diego.
Newton’s Career Status
Drafted first overall by the Carolina Panthers in 2011, Newton was the league MVP in 2015 and led the Panthers to a Super Bowl that same year. Although he has not played since 2021, he has not officially retired, making it clear that he is still interested in playing an active role in the league.
Newton holds noteworthy NFL records, including 75 career rushing touchdowns. However, those records are now surpassed by Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills. Despite rumors that teams might avoid him due to his dynamic personality, Newton insists he remains ready to return, stating, “I’m open for business.”
Looking Ahead
While Rivers’ signing addresses the Colts’ immediate quarterback needs amidst multiple injuries, the decision has prompted questions about player evaluations and intentions within the league. Newton’s willingness to showcase his skills continues, as he hopes to receive genuine interest from teams ready to welcome him back.
