Parents Voice Concerns at SCSD#3 Board Meeting

The SCSD#3 Board convened on December 11 for its monthly meeting, drawing significant community interest. Eight attendees voiced their concerns primarily regarding the school’s recently implemented ‘House System.’ This system was introduced last year and has stirred a mixed response among parents.

Community Concerns About the House System

Kelly Betz, a parent with strong ties to Clearmont, shared her thoughts during the meeting. Having graduated from Clearmont herself and raised two children in the district, Betz acknowledged the school’s positive aspects. However, she emphasized that while some children thrive under the House System, others do not. She urged the board to organize a public forum for broader community discussion, expressing concern over perceived secrecy in decision-making.

Varied Opinions Among Parents

Amy Vineyard, another Clearmont alum and parent, echoed some of Betz’s sentiments. Although she viewed the House System favorably for younger students, her concerns about its appropriateness for high school students were clear. She specifically criticized the points system used within the houses.

Sam Olson, a parent who is contemplating withdrawing his daughter from Clearmont, voiced his discontent, characterizing the House System as cult-like. He advocates for making participation in the system optional, similar to extracurricular activities like sports and FFA. Olson indicated that this change could influence his decision to keep his daughters enrolled.

Another parent, Cindy Miller, recounted her initial support for Clearmont, but noted her disillusionment leading to her decision to withdraw her daughter. Katie Fennema, whose children both graduated from Clearmont, supported Miller’s stance.

Support for the House System

Despite critiques, some parents and students remain positive about the House System. Natalie Stoll, a house leader, and Jesse Holland, a current Clearmont student, both expressed favorable views on the program. Their perspectives demonstrate that opinions on the House System are varied and complex.

Upcoming Listening Session

To address these concerns, the SCSD#3 Board has scheduled a listening session about the House System. This meeting will take place on December 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the school gym. Community members are encouraged to attend, share their thoughts, and learn more about the system.

  • Date: December 17
  • Time: 7:30 p.m.
  • Location: Clearmont School Gym

Overall, the dialogue surrounding the House System highlights the diverse opinions within the Clearmont community. Parents and board members are urged to continue open conversations to ensure that every student’s needs are met.
