Oilers Acquire Penguins’ Goalie Jarry, Skinner Included in Trade
The Edmonton Oilers have made a significant move by acquiring goaltender Tristan Jarry from the Pittsburgh Penguins. This transfer was confirmed by TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun. In exchange for Jarry, the Oilers will send Stuart Skinner, Brett Kulak, and a second-round pick back to Pittsburgh.
Details of the Trade
As reported by Chris Johnston, the Oilers are trading:
- Stuart Skinner (Goaltender)
- Brett Kulak (Defenseman)
- Second-round draft pick (2026)
This trade is part of the Oilers’ effort to improve their goaltending situation. They have struggled this season, with Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard recording a combined save percentage of .879 through 31 games.
Tristan Jarry’s Performance
Tristan Jarry is having a strong 2025 season. He holds a record of 9 wins, 3 losses, and 1 overtime loss, along with a .909 save percentage and a goals-against average of 2.66. This resurgence follows a challenging start last season, where he cleared waivers after an 8-8-4 record and a .886 save percentage.
After rejoining the Penguins from the AHL, Jarry finished the previous season with a record of 16 wins, 12 losses, and 6 overtime losses, ending with a .893 save percentage. Currently, he is in the third year of a five-year contract worth $26.88 million, carrying a cap hit of $5.38 million.
Oilers’ Goaltending Struggles
The Oilers, who reached the Stanley Cup Finals in consecutive seasons but lost to the Florida Panthers, are currently in a tough spot with a record of 14 wins, 11 losses, and 6 overtime losses. They occupy the top wild-card position in the Western Conference.
Stuart Skinner, who has been an integral part of the Oilers’ previous successes, has an 11-8-4 record this season, with a save percentage of .891 and a goals-against average of 2.83. However, he is a pending unrestricted free agent and carries a cap hit of $2.6 million.
Brett Kulak, on the other hand, has recorded two assists over 31 games this season. He is also a pending UFA, with a cap hit of $2.75 million.
Additional Trade: Spencer Stastney
In a separate transaction, the Oilers acquired defenseman Spencer Stastney from the Nashville Predators. This deal involves a third-round draft pick in 2027. Stastney, 24, has one goal and nine points in 30 games this season.
This series of trades marks a pivotal moment for the Oilers as they aim to bolster their roster for a better performance in the second half of the season. More updates on these trades will be forthcoming from El-Balad.
