Fordham Students Secure Gilman Scholarships for International Study

Two Fordham University undergraduates have been awarded prestigious Gilman Scholarships, allowing them to study abroad next year. Andrra Kryeziu and Zainab Razia will utilize this opportunity to enhance their educational experience and cultural understanding.

Gilman Scholarship Overview

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is a merit-based program funded by the U.S. Congress. It aims to assist U.S. citizens in developing important skills through exposure to diverse languages and cultures. Eligible applicants must be Pell Grant recipients.

Fordham Scholars

  • Andrra Kryeziu: A junior majoring in International Political Economy, Kryeziu will study international relations and business in Paris this spring.
  • Zainab Razia: A political science major, Razia plans to explore migration policy in Granada, Spain, and Morocco during the summer.

Increased Participation in Study Abroad Programs

Fordham University has seen a significant rise in study abroad participation, reaching a historic high of 51%. This places the university among the top 20 doctoral-granting institutions for the number of students studying abroad for a full semester.

Last year, 11 students received Gilman Scholarships, contributing to this upward trend. Lorna Ronald, PhD, Director of the Office of Fellowship Advising, emphasized the importance of these scholarships, noting that recipients gain access to a network of past scholars and priority hiring consideration within the federal government.

The Impact of Studying Abroad

Students who engage in international studies gain critical insights into different cultures, which can shift their perspectives on citizenship and global responsibility. “When students see themselves as cultural ambassadors, their thinking about future contributions changes,” Ronald stated.

Personal Aspirations

Andrra Kryeziu, originally from Kosovo and now based in North Carolina, has long aspired to experience Paris. She aims to learn French and broaden her education by engaging with classmates from various backgrounds.

Meanwhile, Zainab Razia, a Queens native commuting to the Lincoln Center campus, is eager to embrace the cultural diversity of Granada. “Studying abroad will help me gain an international perspective,” she remarked, highlighting her previous experiences visiting Pakistan.

The opportunities afforded by the Gilman Scholarships will not only benefit Kryeziu and Razia’s academic goals but will also enrich their personal and professional growth on a global scale.
