Google Pulls AI-Generated Disney Videos Following Legal Order
Google has taken down numerous AI-generated videos featuring characters owned by Disney following a cease and desist order from the entertainment giant. The legal action was initiated after Disney identified videos that included popular characters such as Mickey Mouse and figures from franchises like “Star Wars” and “The Simpsons.”
Background of the Legal Action
On Wednesday, Disney sent a letter to Google detailing its concerns and requesting immediate removal of the objectionable content. Many of these videos were created using Google’s AI video tool, Veo. By Thursday, the links to these videos were still present but redirected users to a notice stating, “This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by Disney.”
Disney’s Licensing Strategy
Shortly before the cease and desist letter, Disney announced a new licensing agreement with OpenAI. This deal allows OpenAI to use 200 of Disney’s characters, enabling users of Sora to generate short AI clips featuring those characters. Disney aims to set boundaries to safeguard its intellectual property from unauthorized AI usage.
Characters Targeted by Disney
- Mickey Mouse
- Deadpool
- Characters from “Star Wars”
- Characters from “The Simpsons”

Google’s Response
In response to the situation, Google expressed its commitment to collaborating with Disney. The company emphasized its long-standing relationship with the studio, stating, “We will continue to engage with them.” Additionally, Google mentioned the use of public data to develop its AI and referenced its copyright control measures on platforms like YouTube.
Future Safeguards
Disney also urged Google to implement safeguards to block its AI tools from generating videos featuring Disney characters. The studio requested that Google halt the use of its characters in training AI models. This step signifies Disney’s proactive approach to preserve its brand image and protect its creations.
