Nebraska football has bolstered its coaching staff with the addition of Rob Aurich and Geep Wade. Head Coach Matt Rhule made the announcement, revealing Aurich will take on the role of defensive coordinator and Wade will coach the offensive line. Both coaches bring significant winning experience from programs that achieved nine victories in the 2025 season.

Rob Aurich: New Defensive Coordinator

Rob Aurich joins Nebraska following a successful stint at San Diego State, where he served as the defensive coordinator for the past two seasons. In 2025, Aurich’s defense was among the nation’s best, achieving three shutouts and limiting eight out of twelve opponents to ten points or fewer.

  • Ranked fifth nationally in scoring defense, allowing just 12.5 points per game.
  • Averaged 4.12 yards per play, placing fifth across the nation.
  • Achieved second place in ESPN’s Stop Rate and tied for first in Red Zone defense.

Aurich, a Minnesota-Duluth graduate, has over a decade of coaching experience. Starting at the Division II level, he moved through the FCS ranks before reaching San Diego State. His defenses have consistently ranked among the top 25. Coach Rhule praised Aurich’s skills, noting his emphasis on fundamentals and energetic defensive style.

Aurich’s Coaching Philosophy

“I am truly honored to step into this role,” Aurich expressed. “I respect the history of this program deeply and look forward to the challenge of meeting the high expectations of Nebraska’s passionate fan base.”

Geep Wade: Offensive Line Coach

Geep Wade comes to Nebraska from Georgia Tech, where he spent three successful years as the offensive line coach. Under his leadership, the Yellow Jackets ranked seventh nationally in fewest sacks allowed and ninth in rushing yards per attempt for the past three seasons.

  • Produced 23 all-conference awards in 11 seasons as a full-time FBS offensive line coach.
  • Wade’s linemen earned nine All-ACC awards from 2023 to 2025.

Wade’s coaching history includes experience at various institutions, such as Tennessee and Marshall. Rhule highlighted Wade’s coaching prowess and recruiting skills, emphasizing that his background in developing offensive linemen will significantly benefit Nebraska.

Wade’s Commitment to Nebraska

Wade expressed enthusiasm about his new position, stating, “The tradition at the University of Nebraska is unmatched.” He has known Coach Rhule for years and appreciates the program’s direction under his leadership. Wade will join the Nebraska staff in preparation for the upcoming Vegas Bowl against Utah.
