UPAC Meets Rizqy’s Associate Amid PLQ Crisis

The ongoing investigation by the Unité permanente anticorruption (UPAC) has taken a new turn as they met with Isabelle Lord, an associate of Marwah Rizqy. This meeting forms part of a broader inquiry into allegations of misconduct and influence peddling connected to the leadership campaign of Pablo Rodriguez.

UPAC Investigation and Key Individuals

Isabelle Lord, who serves as the director of Rizqy’s constituency office, played a significant role as a volunteer in Rodriguez’s campaign. She was the regional coordinator for five Montreal electoral districts. Lord has been affiliated with Liberal offices for approximately 20 years and started her role with Rizqy in 2023.

Earlier this year, Rizqy appointed Lord as her new chief of staff after dismissing Geneviève Hinse without warning. However, Rodriguez later annulled this decision, leading to Rizqy’s suspension and subsequent exclusion from the caucus. She now holds the position of independent Member of the National Assembly (MNA).

Rodriguez Addresses the Media

During a recent press conference in Quebec, Rodriguez stated that, to his knowledge, no contact had been made by UPAC with his campaign team or himself regarding the ongoing investigation. He expressed his determination to weather the situation, describing himself as a “fighter” amidst the turmoil, which includes calls for his resignation.

  • Rodriguez acknowledged an error in renting a campaign office space owned by his wife, costing nearly $20,000.
  • He admitted that the decision might have affected public perception and stated, “If I had to do it again, I would rent elsewhere.”

Rodriguez faced criticism for reportedly compensating team members with severance payments during their federal service, which he claims was conducted within legal frameworks. Nonetheless, some believe this approach created an unfair advantage during the leadership race.

Challenges and Support for Rodriguez

Rodriguez expressed disappointment over how the current parliamentary session has unfolded. He noted the absence of key supporters like Marie-Claude Nichols, due to family health issues, and anticipates the return of Greg Kelley, Rizqy’s partner, in future sessions.

  • Rodriguez emphasized unity as crucial, pointing to potential early elections that could arise.
  • He warned against internal discord, describing it as irresponsible at a critical electoral time.

A letter of support for Rodriguez, signed by approximately 40 presidents of constituency associations, is currently being circulated. He reassured his supporters of the backing from party members, reiterating that no leader enjoys universal approval.

The inquiry by UPAC complicates the political landscape as the Quebec Liberal Party navigates through these allegations while gearing up for significant future elections.
