Former Lions QB Joins New NFL Team After Release
Adrian Martinez, a former quarterback for the Detroit Lions, has secured a position with the New York Jets’ practice squad just a day after being released. The decision comes after Martinez’s stint with the San Francisco 49ers this season. He initially joined the Lions as an undrafted free agent in 2023, where he showed promise during training camp.
Martinez’s NFL Journey
Martinez faced significant competition while in Detroit, sharing the quarterback roster with rookie Hendon Hooker. Despite his efforts, he did not make the final roster but later showcased his skills in the United Football League (UFL). He played exceptionally well for the Birmingham Stallions, amassing:
- 1,750 passing yards
- 15 touchdown passes
- 3 interceptions
- 530 rushing yards
- 3 rushing touchdowns
Martinez’s performance earned him a spot on the All-UFL team and the title of UFL Championship MVP.
Return to the Jets
After a brief attempt with the 49ers, where he only participated in a kneel-down, he rejoined the Jets, who currently have slim playoff hopes. This new opportunity may allow him more exposure as the season progresses.
Meanwhile, the Lions have also transitioned away from Hooker, who was released prior to this season. Hooker then joined the Carolina Panthers but was released in November and remains without a team.
Lions’ Current Context
With Jared Goff continuing to lead the Lions, the team’s focus is on securing a playoff spot. Goff’s strong performances have diminished the need for backup quarterbacks. This weekend, the Lions will face the Los Angeles Rams, a matchup that carries significant playoff implications.
Reflecting on his past with the Rams following a trade that sent Matthew Stafford to Los Angeles, Goff stated, “It feels like a long time ago.” The Rams were eliminated by the Lions in the playoffs earlier this season, adding to the stakes of their upcoming clash.
