Hughes Informed Canucks He Won’t Re-Sign This Summer
Quinn Hughes has confirmed that he will not be signing an extension with the Vancouver Canucks this summer. This news was communicated just before American Thanksgiving. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman revealed this during the “Saturday Headlines” on Hockey Night in Canada.
Trade Details
In light of Hughes’ decision, the Canucks made a significant move by trading him to the Minnesota Wild. In exchange, Vancouver received:
- Zeev Buium (defenseman)
- Marco Rossi (forward)
- Liam Ohgren (forward)
- A first-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft
Canucks’ Current Standings
The Canucks currently sit at the bottom of the NHL standings with an 11-17-3 record. They had lost six out of eight games leading up to Thanksgiving.
Hughes’ Performance and Future
Quinn Hughes has had a challenging season, with two goals and 21 assists in 26 games. Over his seven-and-a-half seasons in Vancouver, he has played 459 regular-season games and recorded an impressive 432 points. This set a new record for points by a Canucks defenseman in October, surpassing the previous record held by Alex Edler.
Trade Market Impact
Friedman noted that Hughes’ reluctance to commit long-term deterred many potential trade partners. His agent, Pat Brisson, confirmed this sentiment after the trade occurred. Brisson stated, “We were looking for a fit where hopefully Quinn will have a tremendous hockey experience and re-evaluate from there whether he will extend or not.”
Interestingly, the Minnesota Wild and New Jersey Devils were the only teams not put off by Hughes’ hesitancy to sign an extension. The Devils, however, faced challenges in clearing cap space, preventing a potential move.
The future remains uncertain for Hughes, as he embarks on this new chapter with the Wild while the Canucks seek to rebuild after a disappointing start to the season.
