Colts Elevate QB Philip Rivers, Place T Braden Smith on Injured Reserve
The Indianapolis Colts have made significant roster moves ahead of their Week 15 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks. They signed veteran quarterback Philip Rivers from the practice squad, elevating him to the active roster. This decision comes after Rivers, 44, ended his retirement, having been away from the field for nearly five years.
Roster Adjustments for Week 15
To accommodate Rivers on the 53-man roster, the Colts placed tackle Braden Smith on injured reserve. Smith sustained a neck injury and a concussion during the Colts’ Week 14 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars and did not practice leading up to the Seahawks game. He is expected to miss the final four games of the 2025 regular season.
Additional Elevations
In addition to Rivers, the Colts elevated wide receiver Coleman Owen and defensive tackle Chris Wormley from the practice squad. These changes are intended to strengthen the team as they prepare for this crucial game.
Uncertain Starting Quarterback
Head coach Shane Steichen has not yet confirmed the starting quarterback for the game against the Seahawks. Rookie quarterback Riley Leonard, who has been dealing with a knee issue, fully participated in practice this week. Additionally, veteran Brett Rypien was signed from the practice squad, further adding to the quarterback options.
Philip Rivers’ Hall of Fame Eligibility
With Rivers elevated to the active roster, he is now ineligible for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2026. Rivers ranks sixth all-time in passing touchdowns with 421, seventh in passing yards with 63,440, and ninth in completions with 5,277. Earlier this year, he was named one of 26 semifinalists for the Hall of Fame, but his eligibility will now extend to the Class of 2031.
Personal Reflections
Rivers commented that the timing of his return did not influence his decision to end his retirement. He aims to contribute significantly to the Colts in the remaining season. For his return, Rivers will wear jersey number 17, which he will don with encouragement from Daniel Jones, a teammate who recently underwent surgery for a season-ending injury.
