Pittsburgh Prepares for Major Snowfall and Freezing Temperatures

The Pittsburgh area is bracing for significant snowfall and plunging temperatures this weekend. A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for counties south of Allegheny County. Additionally, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Allegheny County and adjacent regions.

Details of the Winter Weather Advisory

The National Weather Service announced the Winter Storm Warning earlier this week. This warning covers areas along and south of I-70, effective from 1 p.m. today through Sunday. Meteorologists anticipate a “band of heavier snow” affecting these regions.

Expected Snow Accumulation

As per weather forecasts, most areas in Pittsburgh are likely to receive between two and four inches of snow. More specific predictions indicate:

  • Pittsburgh: 3-5 inches
  • Ridge areas: 5-10 inches

Impact of Cold Temperatures

Accompanying the snowfall will be extremely cold air. As the snow decreases around midnight on Sunday, temperatures will plummet into single digits. Wind chill factors may drop below zero, with gusts potentially reaching 15-20 mph.

Preparation of Road Crews

Road crews in western Pennsylvania are gearing up for the winter storm. In Allegheny County, approximately 24 salt trucks are on standby, equipped with over 9,000 tons of salt. Authorities urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel, allowing crews the space needed to clear the roads effectively.
