Michael Bradley Named Head Coach of New York Red Bulls

Michael Bradley has been appointed as the head coach of the New York Red Bulls, marking a significant transition for the club. His promotion follows a successful tenure with the Red Bulls II, where he led the team to victory in the 2025 MLS NEXT Pro title.

Leadership Transition for New York Red Bulls

Bradley, aged 38, replaces Sandro Schwarz, who departed in October after the team’s failure to qualify for the Audi 2025 MLS Cup Playoffs. This season’s missed opportunity ended a remarkable 15-year streak of postseason appearances for the club, which had culminated in a championship match the previous year. The club also witnessed the exit of head of sport Jochen Schneider, with Julian de Guzman taking over his responsibilities.

Coaching Philosophy and Club Direction

De Guzman expressed confidence in Bradley’s capabilities, noting his exceptional playing career and coaching potential. He praised Bradley for his calm leadership style and ability to connect with players. As the Red Bulls look for a “fresh beginning” in 2026, they intend to evolve their playing style beyond the classic Red Bull pressing method.

Bradley will oversee a roster refresh, including the acquisition of a new goalkeeper following the departure of Paraguay international Carlos Coronel, who had been with the club for five seasons. Key players such as Emil Forsberg and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting are expected to retain their positions, while the team may pursue a third Designated Player spot during the winter transfer window.

Bradley’s Journey and Experience

Throughout his illustrious career, Bradley began with the MetroStars at just 16 years old, drafted into MLS in 2004. He has since played nearly 600 matches across multiple leagues in the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, and England. Notable clubs include AS Roma and Aston Villa. He led Toronto FC to an unprecedented treble in 2017 alongside teammates Jozy Altidore and Sebastian Giovinco. After retiring in 2023, he accumulated 151 caps with the US Men’s National Team, ranking third in the program’s history.

Family Legacy and Coaching Foundations

Before his head coaching role, Bradley began his coaching journey as an assistant at Stabæk in Norway, under the guidance of his father, Bob Bradley. Bob, known for his successful tenure with the New York Red Bulls from 2002 to 2005, is highly regarded as one of America’s premier soccer coaches.

Michael Bradley’s appointment as head coach presents a new chapter for the New York Red Bulls. His experience and deep connection to the club position him well to lead the team towards future success.
