Buffalo Sabres Appoint Jarmo Kekäläinen as New General Manager, Dismissing Kevyn Adams
The Buffalo Sabres have executed a significant leadership change by appointing Jarmo Kekäläinen as their new general manager. This move comes after the dismissal of Kevyn Adams, who held the position for over five years but failed to lead the team to playoff appearances.
Buffalo Sabres’ New Direction
Under Kevyn Adams, the Sabres recorded a lackluster 178-196-42 record, resulting in consistent struggles within the Eastern Conference. Despite a recent three-game winning streak, the team’s points percentage was only at .500, placing them near the bottom of the standings. Sabres owner Terry Pegula emphasized the need for change, stating, “We are not where we need to be as an organization.”
Announcement of New General Manager
Jarmo Kekäläinen’s appointment comes immediately, as Pegula expressed confidence in his abilities. “His experience, professionalism, and drive speaks for itself,” Pegula noted. Kekäläinen was initially brought onto the Sabres’ staff as a senior adviser in May 2023 and quickly made a notable impact.
Kekäläinen’s Track Record
Before joining the Sabres, Kekäläinen served as general manager for the Columbus Blue Jackets for 12 seasons, achieving five playoff appearances. He also held significant roles with the Ottawa Senators and St. Louis Blues, demonstrating a wealth of experience in managing NHL franchises.
Personal Challenges and Team’s Schedule
The timing of the announcement was complex, as internal discussions regarding the GM change were ongoing while the team was on a road trip. During this period, Kekäläinen faced personal challenges; he announced the passing of his father, Kari, at the age of 82 on social media.
The Sabres are looking ahead to their next game against the Philadelphia Flyers after a practice session on Tuesday, aiming to improve their standing in the Eastern Conference.
