FBI Releases New Images of Suspect in Fatal Brown University Shooting
The FBI has released new images in connection with a deadly shooting incident at Brown University that occurred on December 13, 2025. The shooting, which took place around 4 p.m. during an economics class on the first floor of the Barus and Holley building, resulted in two student fatalities and nine others injured.
Incident Overview
Authorities have identified two victims: Ella Cook, the vice president of the Brown University College Republicans, and Muhammad Aziz Umurzokov, as confirmed by NBC News through the Uzbekistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Following the shooting, a large-scale manhunt ensued across Rhode Island. The area surrounding the university was put on lockdown for over 12 hours as law enforcement scoured the vicinity for the suspect.
Details on the Suspect
The FBI described the shooter as still at large and “armed and dangerous.” Officials suspect he might still be within Providence but currently lack evidence of an ongoing threat to the community.
Images released show a man reportedly dressed in a dark jacket, pants, shoes, a beanie, and a face mask, captured walking down Hope Street about two hours before the shooting. Three additional videos of this individual were also made available to the public.
Authorities’ Responses
During a press conference on December 15, Providence Police Chief Col. Oscar L. Perez, Jr. urged anyone who may recognize the individual in the photographs to come forward with information.
As part of their investigation, the FBI has offered a reward of up to $50,000 for any tips leading to the identification, arrest, and conviction of the gunman. Special Agent in Charge Ted Docks emphasized that no piece of information is too minor to be considered.
Current Status of Victims
As of the latest updates, one injured student remains in critical but stable condition, while seven others are hospitalized in stable condition. One student has already been released from medical care.

Initially, a person of interest, a man in his 30s, was taken into custody shortly after the shooting but was released the following morning based on additional evidence gathered by authorities. Providence Mayor Brett Smiley confirmed this development but did not disclose the specifics of the evidence that led to the man’s release.
