Formula 1 Returns to Portugal in 2027 and 2028 at Algarve Circuit
The Algarve Circuit in Portugal will host Formula 1 races in 2027 and 2028. This announcement will be officially made by Portugal’s Minister of Economy, Manuel Castro Almeida, on Tuesday. The circuit has a rich history, having previously hosted the Portuguese Grand Prix in 2020 and 2021.
History of the Algarve Circuit
The Algarve Circuit first welcomed Formula 1 in 2020. The inaugural race occurred amid the COVID-19 pandemic and limited attendance. Only 27,500 spectators were allowed due to health restrictions. The following year, in 2021, the event took place behind closed doors, with no fans in attendance.
Racers Praise the Circuit
Drivers often commend the unique features of the Algarve Circuit. Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, expressed his excitement about returning to Portugal. He remarked on his nostalgia for the Portuguese Grand Prix, recalling the race’s previous location in Estoril. Fernando Alonso also praised the circuit, highlighting its challenging blind corners and tire demands. Esteban Ocon called it “spectacular and complicated,” especially noting the difficulty of the blind exit.
Challenges in Hosting Formula 1
Stefano Domenicali, the CEO of Formula 1, commented on the challenges of including Portugal in the racing calendar. In September, he confirmed interest from several countries, including Portugal, Turkey, and Germany. However, he cautioned about the limited spots available, emphasizing the need for financial backing from potential host countries.
The Legacy of the Portuguese Grand Prix
The first Grand Prix in Portugal took place in 1958 at the Circuito da Boavista in Porto. Stirling Moss won that historic race, marking Portugal’s initial foray into the world of elite motorsport. Over the years, different venues have hosted the event, including the Circuito do Estoril, which was home to the Portuguese Grand Prix from 1984 to 1996.
- Ayrton Senna won in 1985, 1986, and 1988 at Estoril.
- The 1986 race featured a famous photo of Senna, Alain Prost, Nigel Mansell, and Nelson Piquet.
- The Algarve Circuit is celebrated for its challenging layout and scenic views.
Portugal’s return to the Formula 1 calendar in 2027 and 2028 will further solidify the country’s reputation as a significant player in international motorsport.
