Enhanced Gateway Transforms Bedford Town Centre at Greyfriars
Bedford’s Town Deal partnership is embarking on an ambitious transformation of Greyfriars Junction. Starting Monday, January 5, this project will continue until Autumn 2026. This initiative forms a critical part of the Transporting Bedford 2030 plan, aimed at enhancing the local transport network.
Investment and Collaboration for Bedford Town Centre
The Greyfriars project is supported by a robust £22.6 million investment from the government, managed in collaboration with Bedford Borough Council and the Bedford Town Deal Board. This board consists of independent stakeholders focused on revitalizing the town centre. Additionally, Bedfordshire Police has contributed £250,000 towards the project costs.
Project Objectives
The enhancements at Greyfriars Junction aim to facilitate new development opportunities, particularly at the former police station site and the surrounding area. Key features of the project include:
- Upgrades along the Greyfriars car park leading to Midland Road.
- Enhanced cycling and pedestrian infrastructure.
- Provisions for improved bus travel accommodating current and future needs.
These improvements intend to create a safer and more accessible environment for all travelers, including pedestrians and cyclists. The project is carefully designed to minimize disruption to bus services through close coordination with local bus operators.
Community Engagement and Future Vision
Signage will be posted at affected bus stops to keep the public informed. Samantha Laycock, Chair of the Bedford Town Deal Board, expressed her excitement about the project. According to Laycock, it represents a significant commitment to transforming Bedford into a vibrant and sustainable town.
Councillor Andrea Spice, Portfolio Holder for Economic Growth, Planning, and Prosperity, echoed this sentiment, stating that these enhancements improve safety and accessibility while promoting local economic growth.
One notable aspect of the project is the restoration of the Italian Statue located at the roundabout, which will be relocated to a more suitable site for display, underscoring the project’s cultural significance.
Public Involvement Opportunities
Engagement with residents and local businesses is vital to the project’s success. Several public engagement stalls have been set up in the area to keep stakeholders informed. The next opportunity for community interaction is on Thursday, December 18, from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM, near the old Police Station.
Further public events are scheduled for 2026, ensuring that as many people as possible can participate in discussions about the progress and plans. For additional project details, project overview, and frequently asked questions, residents can visit the Bedford Borough Council’s official website.
