Orkney Gin and Whisky Brand Issued ‘Do Not Drink’ Warning

Health authorities have issued a severe warning against consuming gin and whisky products from Kimbland Distillery in Orkney. Food Standards Scotland (FSS) announced that the distillery faced serious concerns regarding its safety protocols.

FSS stated that Kimbland Distillery, located on the island of Sanday, has been producing alcoholic beverages “without the required safety controls.” They have also failed to prove that their products adhere to the necessary safety standards.

• New Make Spirit of Whisky (all sizes)
• Sanday Tempest Gin 70cl
• Sanday Sunset Gin 70cl
• Sanday No.1 Gin 70cl
• Filled barrels and casks

Stuart McAdam, head of incidents at FSS, emphasized the importance of consumer safety. He stated, “We are warning consumers not to drink any products from the Kimbland Distillery due to safety concerns.” This alert is particularly crucial as the festive season approaches, where many may consider purchasing these spirits as gifts.

Enforcement Actions and Distribution Concerns

FSS has instructed enforcement authorities throughout Scotland to identify and reach out to establishments possibly stocking these products. While distribution appears to be concentrated in Orkney, the distillery’s online operations raise the potential for wider sales across the nation.

Response from Kimbland Distillery

Sebastian Hadfield Hyde, the owner of Kimbland Distillery, expressed his anger and disbelief over the warning. He commented on BBC Radio Orkney that he felt “furious and upset” because the warning seemed to come unexpectedly. Hyde stressed that no spirits have been produced or sold for the last 18 months due to ongoing renovations at the distillery.

The situation highlights a pressing need for stringent safety measures in the production of alcoholic beverages. Consumers are advised to exercise caution and refrain from using products from Kimbland Distillery until further notice.
