Dolphins Consider Benching Tua Tagovailoa After Loss to Steelers

After a disappointing performance in the recent 28-15 defeat by the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Miami Dolphins are reconsidering their starting quarterback for Week 16. Head coach Mike McDaniel commented that the quarterback play in the game was “not good enough,” leaving the option of a change open for discussion.

Dolphins Weighing Starting Quarterback Change

NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that the Dolphins had considered a quarterback switch earlier this season but decided to stick with Tua Tagovailoa. McDaniel expressed similar sentiments during a previous press conference following the Dolphins’ 31-6 loss to the Cleveland Browns in Week 7. “Everything is on the table,” he stated during that media session.

Tagovailoa’s Recent Performance

  • Against the Browns, Tagovailoa recorded 12 completions on 23 attempts, totaling 100 yards with three interceptions.
  • This marked his second consecutive game with three interceptions.
  • In the game against the Steelers, he had only 65 passing yards and one interception through three quarters.
  • Despite a surge in the fourth quarter, where he threw for an additional 188 yards and two touchdowns, the team still fell short.

During a six-game stretch prior to the Steelers’ match, Tagovailoa accumulated 1,094 yards, seven touchdowns, and four interceptions. Nonetheless, his form appeared to decline in recent outings.

Backup Options for the Dolphins

If the Dolphins decide to make a switch, they have a couple of backup quarterbacks to consider:

  • Zach Wilson: Has thrown nine passes in three appearances this season.
  • Quinn Ewers: In his sole appearance, he went 5-of-8 for 53 yards against the Browns.

Looking ahead, the Dolphins will face the Cincinnati Bengals at Hard Rock Stadium this Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. The decision on whether to bench Tagovailoa for that game remains to be seen.
