Canadiens’ Matheson Out, Fowler to Start Against Flyers

The Montreal Canadiens recently made significant roster adjustments ahead of their matchup against the Philadelphia Flyers. The team has sent starting goalie Sam Montembeault to the AHL’s Laval Rocket on a conditioning assignment. This move comes as Montembeault has struggled this season, posting a record of 5-6-1, along with a 3.65 goals-against average and an .857 save percentage.

Montembeault’s Conditioning Assignment

Montembeault’s assignment to Laval follows a series of poor performances. He last played on December 2, where he conceded five goals in a 5-2 loss to the Ottawa Senators. Following this, he entered in relief during a 6-1 defeat against the Tampa Bay Lightning on December 9, allowing three goals.

His conditioning assignment will last a maximum of 14 days, requiring his consent due to the NHL-NHLPA collective bargaining agreement. He is scheduled to join the Rocket in Cleveland for practice.

Jacob Fowler’s Opportunity

In response to the goaltending issues, the Canadiens have promoted Jacob Fowler from Laval. Fowler, a 21-year-old American, is set to make his third career start against the Flyers. He made a strong debut last Thursday, recording 36 saves in a 4-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins, although he experienced a setback in his next game, losing 5-4 in overtime to the New York Rangers.

Defensive Changes: Mike Matheson Out

Additionally, the Canadiens will be without defenceman Mike Matheson, who is day-to-day with an upper-body injury. Matheson, 31, has been a key player, contributing four goals and 12 assists over 32 games this season. He leads the team in ice time, averaging almost 25 minutes per game.

Upcoming Events

The Canadiens are looking to bounce back with Fowler in goal as they face the Flyers. The team hopes to improve on its recent performances and stabilize its goaltending situation.
