Novena de Aguinaldos 2025: Origins, Procedures, and Start Date

The Novena de Aguinaldos is a cherished Christmas tradition in Colombia, signifying a time of spiritual connection for families and friends. It begins on December 16 and culminates on Christmas Eve, December 24, spanning nine days filled with prayers, hymns, and communal gatherings.

Origins of the Novena de Aguinaldos

This celebration traces its roots to the colonial period in Colombia. It was during the 18th century when Ecuadorian priest Fray Fernando de Jesús Larrea introduced the tradition to various Colombian communities. He worked closely with María Gertrudis Clemencia de Caycedo, an educational pioneer in Bogotá, who advocated for women’s education.

Clemencia requested Larrea to compose a text to convey the meaning of Christmas to her students. Over time, this text has evolved, leading to contemporary versions of the Novena. One notable adaptation was made by María Ignacia, inspired by her parents’ literary background. This rendition added joyful songs known as “gozos” to the celebration.

Spread and Similarities

The Novena de Aguinaldos has not only remained a Colombian custom but has also spread to countries like Ecuador and Venezuela. It shares similarities with the Mexican posadas and is deeply rooted in both religious and festive family gatherings.

How the Novena is Celebrated

Typically held in homes, churches, or community centers, participants engage in prayers and sing traditional carols recounting the Nativity story. Key elements include:

  • A nativity scene representing Jesus’ birthplace, adorned with figures and lit with candles daily.
  • Traditional foods such as buñuelos, natilla, and tamales, which vary by region.

Each day’s prayers include specific intentions and reflections, structured around significant figures in the Christmas narrative. The sequence is as follows:

Day Focus
1 The Angel Gabriel, messenger of hope
2 The Virgin Mary, heart that nests in hope
3 The Virgin Mary, pilgrim of hope
4 Isabel, hope turned into joy
5 Saint Joseph, model of hope in trials
6 John the Baptist, witness to the light of hope
7 The Wise Men, interpreters of hope
8 Christians, examples of patience in hope
9 Jesus Christ, our peace and hope

Throughout this period, the community shares prayers, including those directed to the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph, alongside joyful Christmas carols.
