I-80, Center Street Interchange to Close December 22
The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has announced the closure of the Interstate 80 interchange ramps at Center Street/Meadow Avenue in Joliet. This closure is set to begin after the evening rush on Monday, December 22, subject to weather conditions. In addition, Center Street/Meadow Avenue will also close over I-80 between Wheeler Avenue and Morgan Street.
I-80 Center Street Interchange Reconstruction
The closure is part of a project to reconstruct and reconfigure the interchange at I-80 and Center Street. Drivers can expect detours directing traffic to various routes including:
- U.S. 6
- Larkin Avenue (Illinois 7)
- Jefferson Street (U.S. 52)
It is important to note that the ramp from eastbound Meadow Avenue to eastbound I-80 will remain open. However, this ramp is anticipated to close for repairs in fall 2027.
Ongoing I-80 Reconstruction Efforts
This interchange is one of six being rebuilt as part of a comprehensive effort to modernize I-80. The project spans 16 miles from Ridge Road in Minooka to U.S. 30 in Joliet and New Lenox. Key aspects of the reconstruction include:
- Improved interchanges at I-55, Illinois 7, Center Street, Chicago Street, Richards Street, and Briggs Street.
- A new flyover ramp linking southbound I-55 to eastbound I-80.
- Rehabilitation or replacement of more than 30 bridges, including those over the Des Plaines River.
The total cost of the I-80 project is projected at $1.3 billion, with completion anticipated by the end of 2028. However, landscaping and some additional work may extend into 2029.
What to Expect During the Closure
As the reconstruction begins, motorists should be prepared for:
- Lane shifts
- Overnight lane closures
- Significant traffic delays
Drivers are advised to allow extra time for their travels through the work zone. They should follow flaggers and road signs, adhere to posted speed limits, and remain vigilant for construction workers and equipment.
