“NPR: ACA Subsidies Must Not Expire, Urgent Action Needed”
Rep. Mike Lawler, a Republican from New York, has expressed strong criticism regarding congressional inaction on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies. He labeled it “idiotic” and “shameful” that millions of Americans could face the loss of these critical financial supports.
Urgent Need for Action on ACA Subsidies
Over 20 million individuals rely on ACA subsidies, which are set to expire at the end of this year. A key vote is scheduled for Wednesday, concerning a proposal from Speaker Mike Johnson aimed at reducing health costs while implementing conservative reforms. Notably, this proposal does not include an extension of the ACA subsidies.
Health Care Premiums at Risk of Surge
In a recent interview on NPR’s Morning Edition, Lawler stated that allowing the subsidies to lapse is unacceptable, particularly as healthcare premiums are expected to surge. While he agrees with Johnson’s assessment that the current healthcare system is flawed, Lawler emphasized the necessity of having a concrete plan and reforms in place before ending the subsidies. He asserted, “You have to have reforms in place. And to just end the subsidy without those changes to me is idiotic.”
Efforts for Bipartisan Support
Lawler discussed ongoing efforts among some House Republicans to advocate for a temporary extension of ACA subsidies. They aim to secure bipartisan support to develop a comprehensive solution to the healthcare funding issue.
