Butler, Mafah, and One More Rejoin Cowboys Practice
As the Dallas Cowboys head towards the conclusion of the 2025 regular season, they are opening a practice window for three players previously on injured reserve. Running back Phil Mafah, defensive end Payton Turner, and cornerback Josh Butler are now eligible for a potential return ahead of a crucial game against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Players Returning to Practice
The Cowboys have initiated a 21-day practice window for these players. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer emphasized the importance of this opportunity, stating, “It’s just a chance to get them on the grass and see the guys compete.” All three athletes have been sidelined and have yet to participate in any games this season.
Focus on Josh Butler
Among the trio, Josh Butler has faced significant challenges. The young cornerback suffered a severe knee injury in late November 2024, halting his season. Throughout the past year, Butler has dedicated himself to recovery. Although he expressed eagerness to return weeks ago, the Cowboys opted for caution in his rehabilitation process.
Butler was enjoying a breakout season, having impressed against the Washington Commanders before the injury occurred just four days later in a game against the New York Giants.
Injuries to Mafah and Turner
- Payton Turner: Signed as a free agent in March, Turner sustained a rib injury in August, placing him on injured reserve.
- Phil Mafah: A seventh-round draft pick in April, Mafah showed promise during training camp but also ended up on IR due to a shoulder injury.
Neither Turner nor Mafah has appeared in a regular-season game for the Cowboys, unlike Butler, whose early performances indicated significant potential.
Impending Decisions Ahead of Season Finale
The Cowboys face a timeline for decisions regarding these players, as the window will close soon. Their regular season finale against the New York Giants looms, with the exact date yet to be determined. The reopening of practice for Duchler, Mafah, and Turner signals hope for the team as they navigate the final stretch of the season.
