Xcel Warns Colorado of Potential Multiday Power Cuts

Xcel Energy has issued a warning to residents in Colorado regarding potential multiday power outages. These outages are expected to affect five counties in the Denver metropolitan area and along the Front Range.

Power Outages Due to Severe Weather

Wind gusts of up to 90 mph are anticipated as a storm approaches Colorado. In response, Xcel Energy has already cut power to approximately 50,000 customers across Boulder, Clear Creek, Jefferson, Larimer, and Weld Counties as of 10 a.m. on Wednesday. Robert Kenney, Xcel’s president, stated, “You might need to prepare for a multiday event.”

As of early Wednesday afternoon, around 98,000 Xcel customers were without power, with outages extending beyond the initially targeted areas. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) took precautionary measures by closing several roads, including:

  • Colorado 93 from Golden to Eldorado Springs
  • Colorado 128 from Indiana Street to Colorado 93
  • U.S. 36/North Foothills Highway from Boulder to Lyons

Public Safety and Health Precautions

Wind activity has harmed power lines, resulting in traffic signal outages and downed trees obstructing roads. Boulder County’s Office of Disaster Management confirmed these issues as the winds intensified.

Amid these environmental challenges, health officials in Nederland issued a warning regarding ash and debris from a previous fire at Caribou Village Shopping Center. Residents are advised to:

  • Keep windows closed during high winds
  • Use HEPA air purifiers indoors
  • Wear N95 masks if exposed to ash

They should also take care to avoid disturbing ash or debris within their homes.

Upcoming Weather Risks

Another storm is predicted for Friday, possibly coinciding with the efforts to restore power from Wednesday’s outages. Utility workers will be mobilized to restore power as conditions permit, but certain areas may remain without electricity for over three days. Xcel is evaluating the necessity of a second power shut-off, which could begin as early as 6 a.m. on Friday.

Commitment to Public Safety

Kenney emphasized that power shut-offs are a critical tool for managing extreme weather conditions and enhancing public safety. Currently, approximately 400 utility workers are prepared to inspect 678 miles of power lines once winds dissipate. This thorough visual inspection is essential to ensure safe restoration of power.

Community Support Services

To support residents affected by power outages, the American Red Cross and local emergency management agencies are establishing community centers. These centers will provide facilities for charging mobile devices and accessing water and warmth. Charging centers will open in Lakewood and Evergreen starting at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Impact on Education and Transportation

Due to the hazardous weather conditions, many schools have opted for a ‘wind day’ and canceled classes, including:

  • Jeffco Public Schools
  • University of Colorado in Boulder
  • Poudre School District in Fort Collins
  • Clear Creek School District

Public transit services have also announced alterations due to power shut-offs.

Xcel has been proactive in monitoring weather forecasts and collaborating with emergency management officials since Sunday to ensure public safety during this tumultuous weather period. Updates will continue to be provided as the situation evolves.
