Ice Trucks Arrive in Miami to Begin Winter Classic Rink Build

The NHL is set to create an impressive ice rink for the Winter Classic in Miami. This year, the League is adopting a new strategy by using two Mobile Refrigeration Units. This upgrade will enhance the cooling process and ensure an optimal ice surface for the game.

Winter Classic Details

Starting around December 23 or 24, the NHL will activate the air conditioning within the Amerant Bank Arena. Workers will then initiate the ice-making process by spraying layers of mist over the pans. This technique aims to form a robust ice sheet before the game, which is scheduled for January 2 in the evening.

Ice Thickness and Quality

  • The ice at Amerant Bank Arena typically measures 1¼ to 1½ inches thick.
  • For the Winter Classic, the NHL plans to create a thickness of 2 to 2½ inches.
  • This additional thickness allows for water removal if needed, improving conditions for play.

King, a key figure in the rink build, expressed confidence in the process. He indicated that managing the venue’s climate should facilitate a high-quality ice surface. The expectation is to control various factors that could affect ice quality, despite potential external conditions.

Player and Management Anticipation

The excitement is palpable among participants. Bill Zito, the general manager of the Panthers, described the Winter Classic as a “spectacular event.” He emphasized that it represents a unique opportunity and a “bucket-list type of occasion” for players and fans alike.

As preparations continue, the goal remains clear: provide the best possible ice conditions for the players during this highly anticipated event.
