Tree Maintenance and Removal on Campus Starts Thursday

Tree maintenance and removal activities will begin on Thursday, December 18. This initiative is part of Case Western Reserve University’s commitment to maintaining a safe and healthy campus environment. The work, managed by the Campus Planning and Facilities Management office, will last until January 12.

Scope of the Tree Maintenance Program

The maintenance program includes two key activities: pruning healthy trees and removing dead or dying trees. The focus will primarily be in the South Residential Village area, although some removals will also occur in central campus locations.

  • Removal of a large northern red oak in front of Nord Hall.
  • Removal of a honeylocust tree near the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences.

Expert Recommendations

Certified master arborists have assessed the conditions of these trees. Their recommendations indicate that the removal of certain trees is necessary to ensure the safety of the university community. This proactive approach aims to prevent hazards that could arise from deteriorating trees.

Future Planting Initiatives

Following the removal of these trees, the university plans to enhance the campus landscape. In the spring, new trees that are appropriate for the campus environment will be planted. This will not only improve aesthetic value but will also contribute to the ecological balance.
