NYC Warns of Strong Winds, Rain, and Coastal Flooding in Forecast

A significant storm is set to impact New York City starting Thursday night, lasting through Friday night. Residents should prepare for strong winds, heavy rainfall, and the possibility of coastal flooding.

Forecast and Weather Warnings for NYC

The National Weather Service (NWS) predicts a cold front will approach, potentially bringing thunderstorms and up to an inch of rain. Conditions are expected to clear by midday on Friday.

Advisories Issued

  • Coastal flood advisories are in effect for all boroughs on Friday.
  • Wind advisories are also in place, with gusts potentially reaching 45 mph.
  • A citywide travel advisory has been announced, prompting residents to plan accordingly.

Emergency Management Commissioner Zach Iscol emphasized the impact of the storm on holiday travel. He advised New Yorkers to check forecasts regularly and allow extra time for travel, especially on Friday.

Safety and Preparedness Measures

Dominic Ramunni, a meteorologist with NWS, urged residents to secure outdoor items, as flying debris could pose hazards. Property owners and construction crews are also advised to take precautions by securing equipment and sites.

Officials will conduct random spot checks, with enforcement measures ready for non-compliance, which could include stop-work orders.

Temperature Changes Ahead

Temperatures from Thursday to Friday may reach the mid-50s, but will likely drop significantly by Friday evening, returning to the 30s. Following the storm, the weekend is forecasted to be clear with temperatures in the 40s.

Looking Ahead

As for the possibility of a white Christmas, Ramunni noted that it is too early to make predictions about snowfall for the upcoming week.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed and prepared during this period of unsettled weather.
