Focus on Media Arts and Collaboration

Mehretu explained that these workshops focus on media arts and film. They encourage deep conversations between countries and artist spaces, aiming to amplify African narratives and challenge existing forms.

The origin of this project traces back to 2018, when Mehretu collaborated with BMW for the 20th Art Car. This history has significantly influenced her current vision for connecting artistic communities across Africa.

Film Production and Final Compilation

Each workshop will culminate in the creation of a new film. At the series’ conclusion, all films will be compiled to showcase contemporary African filmmaking. The showcase will premiere alongside the BMW Art Car exhibition at the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in Cape Town next year.

A Commitment to African Creatives

Mehretu’s connection to the African continent runs deep. Born in Ethiopia, she has lived in countries like Zimbabwe and Senegal, and she travels extensively throughout Africa. Her experiences shape her artistic perspective and her commitment to fostering a pan-African creative community.

Upcoming Art Installation

In addition to her workshops, Mehretu is preparing a unique project for the Obama Foundation. She was commissioned to create a piece for the presidential library in Chicago, incorporating glass into her work for the first time. The installation will rise 34 stories and will be visible next spring.

Having exhibited in renowned institutions globally, Mehretu remains focused on collective creativity. She aspires to collaborate with a broad spectrum of artists and believes that this collective effort opens avenues for greater innovation and cultural expression.
