Hank Bertelkamp, a prominent figure in Tennessee basketball history, has passed away at the age of 94 in Knoxville. He died peacefully at his home, surrounded by family. His contributions to the sport and the local community are widely recognized.

Hank Bertelkamp’s Basketball Legacy

Born in Louisville, Kentucky, on October 5, 1931, Bertelkamp played for the University of Tennessee’s men’s basketball team from 1950 to 1953. During his time with the Volunteers, he was a three-year letter winner and served as team captain in his senior year. In the 1952-53 season, he averaged an impressive 14.3 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, showcasing his skills on the court.

Family and Impact

The Bertelkamp name is revered in Knoxville, particularly in relation to Tennessee basketball. Hank’s son, Bert, followed in his father’s footsteps, playing for the Volunteers from 1976 to 1980. Bert secured a starting position for three years and played in 110 games. Notably, he helped Tennessee clinch the SEC title in the 1976-77 season. In 1980, he set the NCAA Tournament record for most assists in a single game with 16.

After his playing career, Bert transitioned to a role as a radio analyst for the Vol Network, serving for 26 seasons. He eventually retired following the 2024-25 season.

Endowment and Community Engagement

In August 2004, Hank and Bert established the Bertelkamp Basketball Scholarship Endowment Fund, which continues to support student-athletes today. As of the 2025-26 academic year, sophomore guard Bishop Boswell is benefiting from this endowment.

Additionally, the men’s basketball offices at Food City Center bear Hank Bertelkamp’s name, following a dedication ceremony in December 2011. This recognition took place during a game, celebrating his contributions to the program.

Business Endeavors

The Bertelkamp family also runs Bertelkamp Automation, Inc., in Knoxville, focusing on industrial automation solutions. The company, with Hank as founder and chairman and Bert as president, is deeply involved in community service, supporting local organizations like the United Way of Greater Knoxville and the McNabb Center.
