Harbor Patrol Removes Abandoned Boat from Lake Union

The Seattle Police Department’s Harbor Patrol Unit (HPU) recently conducted an operation to remove an abandoned boat from Lake Union. This effort involved multiple agencies and was prompted by concerns regarding the derelict vessel, Genesis IV.

Background of the Genesis IV Removal

The 70-foot concrete-hull boat, the Genesis IV, appeared in Lake Union’s “West Wall” on October 12. This area is typically reserved for short-term mooring. Following complaints from local business owners and residents, HPU commenced a response that would last several weeks.

Multi-Agency Response

  • Seattle Police Department (SPD)
  • Department of Natural Resources (DNR)
  • Washington Department of Ecology (WDE)
  • Seattle Parks and Recreation
  • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
  • Community Assistance Response & Engagement (CARE) team

Timeline of Events

On October 15, HPU issued a 72-hour warning notice to the occupants of the Genesis IV, urging them to relocate the vessel. However, attempts to tow the boat hit a snag when it became clear that the small boat intended for towing was inadequate.

Despite their claims of mechanical issues, the occupants were unable to maintain a current moorage permit or effectively manage the boat. Following a series of warnings and citations for non-compliance, the situation escalated.

Fuel Leakage and Environmental Concerns

Between November 25 and 29, approximately 5 to 10 gallons of fuel leaked from the vessel. HPU quickly alerted the EPA, and containment measures were put in place to mitigate environmental impact.

Final Removal of the Genesis IV

On December 5, following the issuance of a DNR 15-Day Derelict Boat Seizure notice, HPU seized the Genesis IV. The operation to remove the boat took about seven hours and involved significant coordination with community service officers.

Financial Implications of the Operation

  • Cost of fuel spill remediation: $5,000
  • Monthly impound fee: $1,660
  • Estimated total disposal costs: $98,000
  • Total estimated costs: $105,000

Conclusion

Lieutenant Matt Didier of SPD expressed gratitude to all partner agencies and the community for their cooperation throughout this challenging situation. The safe removal of the Genesis IV was the collective priority of all involved.
