Sabres Appoint Bergevin as Associate GM, Flynn as Assistant GM

Buffalo Sabres general manager Jarmo Kekäläinen has announced significant additions to the team’s hockey operations department. Marc Bergevin has been appointed as the associate general manager, while Josh Flynn comes on board as the assistant general manager.

Bergevin’s Experience and Role

Bergevin, age 60, has a long-standing career in the NHL. His most notable role was as the general manager of the Montreal Canadiens from 2012 to 2021, during which he led the team to six playoff appearances, including a journey to the Stanley Cup Final in 2021.

His background includes a five-season tenure as a senior advisor with the Los Angeles Kings. Bergevin’s expertise will be invaluable to the Sabres, particularly in talent evaluation and player development.

  • Notable trades include acquiring Shea Weber from Nashville in 2016 and Nick Suzuki from Vegas in 2018.
  • Bergevin started his front-office career with the Chicago Blackhawks, winning a Stanley Cup as director of player personnel in 2010.

Flynn’s Contributions

Josh Flynn, 43, joins the Sabres after a successful stint with the Columbus Blue Jackets. He previously served as the director of hockey administration from 2013 to 2018 and as assistant general manager thereafter. Flynn’s strong background in salary cap management and contract negotiations will enhance the team’s operational capabilities.

“Both Marc Bergevin and Josh Flynn bring a wealth of unique experience,” Kekäläinen stated. “Their addition strengthens our hockey operations staff and will support our ongoing quest for talent development.”

Kekäläinen’s Vision for the Sabres

This appointment marks the first two additions to the Sabres’ front office since Kekäläinen’s appointment as general manager on December 15. These strategic moves aim to boost the team’s competitive edge in the NHL.

The collaboration between Kekäläinen, Bergevin, and Flynn promises to bring a well-rounded approach to scouting, analytics, and team management as the Sabres strive for future success.
