Pope Leo XIV Names Reverend James Misko as Tucson Bishop
Pope Leo XIV has appointed Reverend James A. Misko as the new Bishop of Tucson. This announcement was made public on December 22, 2025, in Washington, D.C. The declaration was issued by Cardinal Christophe Pierre, the apostolic nuncio to the United States.
Bishop-Elect James Misko: A Brief Biography
Reverend Misko was born on June 18, 1970, in Los Angeles, California. He pursued higher education at St. Edward University in Austin, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in communications in 1993. Before entering the clergy, he worked in the restaurant industry from 1991 to 2000.
Theological Education and Ordination
His theological education culminated in 2007, when he earned three degrees at the University of St. Thomas and St. Mary’s Seminary in Houston. These were a Master of Arts in theological studies, a Master of Divinity, and a Bachelor of Sacred Theology. Reverend Misko was ordained a priest on June 9, 2007.
Pastoral Assignments
Bishop-elect Misko has held various roles within the Diocese of Austin. His assignments include:
- Parochial Vicar at St. Elizabeth of Hungary parish in Pflugerville (2007-2010)
- Administrator of Christ the King parish in Belton (2010-2011)
- Pastor of Christ the King parish in Belton (2011-2014)
- Pastor of St. Louis King of France parish in Austin (2014-2019)
- Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia since 2019
Additionally, he served as diocesan administrator from March to September 2025. Reverend Misko is fluent in English and has proficiency in Spanish, enhancing his ability to connect with diverse communities.
