Jeff Landry, a Republican who assumed office in early 2024, characterized the envoy position as a “volunteer” role and expressed his commitment to his home state of Louisiana. He stated on social media that he considers it an “honor” and plans to advocate for greater U.S. influence over Greenland. In his post, Landry emphasized that this role would not interfere with his gubernatorial duties.
Responses from Greenland and Denmark
Greenland’s Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, reacted to the appointment by urging calm among his constituents. He acknowledged the situation might appear overwhelming but reaffirmed Greenland’s right to self-determination. “We will shape our own future,” he insisted, emphasizing the importance of respecting Greenland’s borders.
The Danish government did not take kindly to the announcement. Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen expressed his “deep outrage” regarding Landry’s appointment and planned to summon U.S. Ambassador to Denmark, Ken Howery, for an explanation.
