In a significant development for the Idaho Vandals football program, Head Coach Thomas Ford Jr. has appointed Lee Stalker as the new defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. This announcement followed an extensive national search and was finalized on Tuesday.

Stalker’s Experience and Achievements

Lee Stalker comes to the Vandals with over 14 years of coaching experience. He spent the last three years at Iowa State, focusing on their defense. During his tenure, the Cyclones had notable success, including:

• Five players awarded All-Big XII honors.
• Seven players named Academic All-Conference.
• Ranking 26th in FBS by allowing just 20 points per game in 2025.
• A strong rush defense, yielding only 138 yards per game.
• Participation in the Big XII Championship and the Pop Tarts Bowl in 2025.

Defensive Strengths at Iowa State

In 2025, Iowa State finished with an impressive 11-3 record, the best in its history. Their defense led the Big XII in pass defense and was fourth in scoring. In Stalker’s first year, the team was recognized as the most improved in FBS, improving its win total significantly.

Coaching Background

Before Iowa State, Stalker coached at Kent State for two seasons. During his time there, the team won the MAC East championship and participated in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. Stalker’s influence contributed to a +13 turnover margin in his first season.

Defensive Coordinator at Valdosta State

Stalker also held the position of defensive coordinator at Valdosta State from 2019 to 2020. His defense was ranked first in the Gulf South Conference and allowed an average of just 18 points per game.
