Utah Dancers Shine in Rockettes’ Christmas Spectacular in NYC
Two talented dancers from Utah are achieving their dreams this holiday season by performing with the iconic Radio City Rockettes in New York City. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the revered dance company, known for its high-kicking performances and the beloved Christmas Spectacular, which draws over a million attendees annually.
Utah Dancers Join the Rockettes
Among the select few accepted into the Rockettes’ ensemble are Isabelle Harris and Emry Wride, who have expressed their astonishment at this incredible opportunity. Each year, approximately 80 dancers are chosen from thousands of applicants worldwide.
Isabelle Harris’ Journey
Isabelle Harris hails from Heber Valley and has dreamt of being a Rockette since her childhood. She admired the dancers while watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and felt inspired by their glamour and strength. After graduating high school, Harris moved to New York City to hone her skills in precision dance, which is a hallmark of the Rockettes’ style. She successfully secured a place in the Rockettes after her first audition.
Emry Wride’s Experience
Emry Wride, from Pleasant Grove, pursued a dance major at Brigham Young University, where she performed with the Cougarettes. Noticing an open call for auditions, she decided to give it a shot, despite her limited knowledge of the Rockettes. The audition process was highly competitive, featuring over a thousand women from various locations, including Australia.
Wride recalled the enchanting atmosphere at Radio City Music Hall, describing it as magical. Through a conservatory program with the Rockettes, she gained insights into the performance experience and solidified her desire to join the dance company. The atmosphere within the group fosters unity and collaboration, creating lasting friendships among the dancers.
The Demanding Rehearsal Schedule
Following acceptance, both dancers participated in an intensive six-week training program. This preparation is crucial for the demanding Christmas Spectacular, which consists of over 100 performances in less than two months. Wride emphasizes the need for their athleticism, as they perform up to 17 shows weekly.
