Severe winter weather is expected as a significant winter storm approaches the Northeast of the United States. This storm is anticipated to heavily disrupt travel during the peak holiday season.

On Friday, December 26, New York City could see up to nine inches (23 cm) of snow. As a result, thousands of flights have already been cancelled or delayed. According to FlightAware, nearly 1,500 flights were cancelled and over 5,400 experienced delays as of Friday afternoon.

- Newark Liberty International Airport
- LaGuardia Airport
Additional airports in nearby areas including Philadelphia, Detroit, and Toronto are also affected. The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning effective from 4 PM Friday until 1 PM Saturday.
Airline Cancellations
Several airlines have reported significant cancellations:
- JetBlue Airways: 227 cancellations
- Delta Air Lines: 213 cancellations
- Republic Airways: 157 cancellations
- Southwest Airlines: 146 cancellations
- American Airlines and United Airlines: Approximately 100 cancellations each
Travelers are encouraged to check with their airlines regarding the status of their flights, especially as conditions worsen. The heaviest snowfall is expected from 6 PM until midnight on Friday.
Precautions During the Storm
Officials are urging caution. New York Governor Kathy Hochul has advised people to avoid non-essential travel. For those who must travel, she recommends planning ahead, taking it slowly, and allowing ample time for safe arrival.
Similar advisories have been issued by the governors of New Jersey and Connecticut. Drivers are warned of hazardous conditions and should prepare an emergency supply kit.
Previous Weather Events
This will mark the second significant snowfall of the season for New York City. The first substantial snowfall occurred on December 14, covering the city in several inches of snow. Mayor Eric Adams has requested that those commuting by car consider leaving early or opting for public transport.
Snow ploughs have been activated and will start clearing streets once two inches of snow have accumulated.
